Just Buy a New Car? Here's What NOT to do...

We all long for the day that we can jump in our new car and hit the road. Considering that the average family's second largest investment is their vehicle, it's no wonder cherish the day we bring home our 4-wheeled "baby". When the day comes and you're sitting in the driver's seat, soaking up that great new-car smell, you're probably pretty eager to hit the gas. But hold on there...to ensure that you take proper care of your new ride, there are some things you should know about your vehicle's break-in period.

Any new brand-new vehicle should be cared for in a particular way during its break-in period (which varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but is usually around 1000 miles). Here are some key points to help you ease your new ride into a long, trouble-free life:

  • Don't stomp the gas or do hard accelerations. Until the oil has had sufficient time to properly circulate through the entire engine, hard accelerations can potentially harm engine internals.

  • For the first 1,000 miles, don't drive over 55 miles per hour (this can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, you should refer to your car's user manual to find out what is recommended).
  • Avoid undue stress on the drivetrain. For example, limit any hauling or towing to only very light loads.
  • Leaving your car to idle for long periods of time is never a good idea no matter how new or old your car may be, however it can be especially hard on new cars. The oil pressure may not be distributing oil to all parts of your new engine.
  • During the first few hours of driving, try to keep the RPMs below 3,000. If your car doesn't have a tachometer that shows the engine RPMs, just accelerate very lightly.
Following these tips can help your brand new vehicle's engine break in properly so that it has a long, problem-free life. Are you ready to find your new vehicle?
