Even new tires need inspection, here's why

Even if your tires are fairly new, it’s important to inspect them weekly; if you have suspension problems, new tires can be ruined quickly. Keeping an eye on tire wear can help keep you safer and alert you to any potential problems so you can have the SVG Service Department address them quickly. This chart shows you some common issues and what they mean.


1.)  Feathered edges on tire – The front suspension on your vehicle can be tuned multiple ways; the tires can be made to shift slightly left or right, or even in or out on the top or sides. When the tires are aligned to point slightly in or out at the FRONT of the tire, that’s called “toe”.  Some racecars will adjust their toe settings to better grip the track, however street vehicles with improper toe settings will just wear out their tires more quickly.

This image shows an example of what a feathered tire surface may look like. While a feathered tire may not look as dramatic as it does here, you should be able to feel any raised edges. Your tire surface should be relatively even. One side of a tread pattern should not be higher than the other.




2.)  Tire cupping (random) – cupped tires typically mean you’ve got worn out shocks, struts or improper tire alignment.

3.)  Tire cupping (edge) – Cupped tire edges could be due to 4 possible problems – poor tire alignment, improper camber setting, wrong toe setting, or worn out shocks.

4.)  One worn side – One of the ways your suspension can be adjusted is to set your camber (either positive or negative). Again, racers will sometimes run excessive camber to help their vehicle grip the track better. Street vehicles do not need positive or negative camber.

A recent trend among the car modding scene has been to add extreme camber to street cars. This serves absolutely no useful purpose, and will only damage your tires and suspension.

5.)  Center wear – if the center of your tire is more worn than the rest of your tire, your tires are overinflated.

6.)  Edge wear (both sides) – Your tires are underinflated if the center tread is fine and both outer edges are worn.
